  • Colored glass bottles + jars (varies heavily by location; check locally)
  • Caps + closures
  • Pumps + dispensers
  • Droppers + applicators
  • Compacts + palettes
  • Lipstick/lip gloss tubes + applicators
  • Mascara tubes + wands
  • Plastic pencil components for eye/lip liner + brow pencils
  • Silicone containers

A:

  • Plastic containers #3, #4, #6 and #7 (when larger than 2" x 2" or a yogurt cup/fist)
  • Broken glass
  • Aerosol cans*
  • Sponges + Brushes

  • Plastic + foil safety seals
  • Plastic bag + wrappers
  • Plastic with foil/metal inlay
  • Nail polish + remover*

*Products considered hazardous materials such as aerosol products, nail polish and nail polish remover should be disposed through proper hazmat disposal. Check for your location's hazmat disposal options.


Q: How should I handle packaging labeled as "compostable" or "biodegradable"?

A:

  • If the package is labeled "backyard compost OK" and you have a backyard compost, you can dispose of it in your home compost.
  • For packages labeled "industrial" compostable, you'll need access to an industrial composting facility, typically available through your city or another program. Check with your composter to ensure they accept compostable packaging and single-use items like takeout containers.
  • If you lack access to composting facilities, dispose of the material in the trash.
  • Note that biodegradable materials are environmentally friendly, but they won't biodegrade in landfills.
